Audition dates: • Sunday 15 September: 7pm • Thursday 19 September: 8pm • Sunday 22 September: 7pm Recalls: Thursday 3 October: 8pm Location: Jersey Green Room Club, Val Plaisant “The love inside.... you take it with you”... Walking back to their apartment late one night, a tragic encounter sees Sam murdered and his beloved girlfriend Molly grief-stricken and utterly lost. But with the help of con-artist psychic Oda-Mae, Sam, trapped between this world and the next, tries to communicate with Molly in the hope of saving her from grave danger… The movie GHOST has proven to be one of cinema’s biggest all-time hits. Starring the late Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg it was the highest grossing film of 1990 and won an Oscar for screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin who has adapted his screenplay for this musical. The movie and the musical feature The Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody alongside many more terrific songs co-written by The Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart. While the movie is very well known, the show is relatively new. It is very current, and is a huge sing for the characters of Sam, Molly and Carl. The music is both bold and emotional, with elements of gospel, funk and even rap. There are many small acting cameo roles and the ensemble will be challenged with pin-point, sharp, modern choreography (fancy break dancing?..!). Audition Details: The audition will take the form of a workshop, and will include games, improvisation, acting, singing and dancing, but all within a friendly and fun environment! We are looking to cast a great company, performers who want to be part of this experience and who will work together to create a wonderful and memorable show. We want to get to know YOU during the audition process, so numbers will be limited at each session to 16 auditionees. Please email Nick: email@example.com register for a space at the audition workshops, orfor more info. If you would like to audition but cannot make these dates please let Nick know and we will try and accommodate you. We are very excited about staging this beautiful story. As a guide, here are the main characters: Character
Sam Wheat (Playing age 22-35) Vocal Range: G# to Bb (Pop/Rock Tenor with high belt) Sam is the hero of our story, a office-worker in New York City, living with his long-term girlfriend, Molly; one day Sam is murdered and as a Ghost he seeks the help of a reluctant medium to protect Molly when the murderer plans to strike again. This character needs to be a strong naturalistic actor and able to interact well with Molly, especially in the romantic scenes; needs to be confident in solo lines as the Ghost and have a New York accent; also needs to be able to move well, Should be very fit. Also, the ability to play guitar would be nice but not necessary.
Molly Jensen (Playing age 22-35) Vocal range: G3 to Eb5 (pop/rock with STRONG belt) Molly is a artist living in New York City with her boyfriend, Sam Wheat, until he's murdered and his ghost comes back to save her; definitely a strong actor; able to interact well with Sam and be convincing when playing the grief-stricken girlfriend; be confident in transition from in-love to broken-hearted while demonstrating a deep sense of strength and inner-peace which is disrupted by the tragic events of the play.
Carl Bruner (Playing age 22-35) Vocal Range: Eb3 to A4 Carl Bruner is the main antagonist of the show and good friend and colleague of Sam's; when Sam discovers there are discrepancies in some bank accounts, which actually is a money-laundering operation run by Carl, he orders his partner, Willie Lopez, to attempt to steal Sam's security codes, which result in Willie killing Sam. Really strong actor and singer, who is able to play slimy businessman; needs to be able to transition from aggressive to slimy when seducing Molly, and play agitated and afraid by the end.
OdaMae Brown (Playing age 25-60) Vocal range: Ab3 to F5 Oda Mae Brown works as a spiritual advisor out of a storefront séance parlor in Brooklyn; though she was told as a child that she had "the gift" by her mother and grandmother (who were both able to communicate with the dead), Oda Mae did not actually experience communication with the spirits until she "met" Sam Wheat during a séance for an unrelated client. Larger-than-life character and able to play for laughs but still have some sincerity and truthful moments; some dancing required, particularly in solos; however, this can be portrayed as comedic. Black actor.
Clara & Louise Alto & Mezzo-Soprano Oda-Mae’s Assistants, can be either younger, same age or older it doesn’t matter. Need to be loud and proud and shameless of what they are doing. More of singing role, but really strong comic ability to get most out of the roles.
Hospital Ghost Baritone (Playing age50+) The Hospital Ghost is one of the main ghosts Sam encounters, solo song and is usually played older but not 100% necessary; great actor and singer required, naturalistic with attitude to him while hiding his sadness.
WillieLopez Non-singing (Playing age 25+) When Willie is introduced, he attempts to rob Sam's wallet; this results in a fight, and Sam is killed. Murder means nothing to him and thinks he’s cool. The kind of person you would avoid on a dark night.Extremely masculine; intimidating.
Subway Ghost Rapper (Any age or gender) Probably out-of-luck when he was alive, he is angry and bitter in death. The Subway Ghost helps and teaches Sam to use his ghostly powers; aggressive, enigmatic, but within the realms of truthfulness; good physical actor required to portray a dominating presence. Experience with rap is helpful.
Ensemble Playing age 18+ Must be able to express emotion, dance and sing very well. Will not include solo songs, but must blend as a company. Dance will be sharp and current – there will be an opportunity for acro and break dance! The supporting characters will be selected from this group, including: Mrs. Santiago, Officer Wallace, Detective Beiderman, Orlando – a Ghost, Ortisha, Lionel Ferguson etc.
